How to use your own domain with Facebook

It's easy to use your own domain with your Facebook profile or your business' Facebook page. Let's say you want to forward www.john-doe.co.za. Here's how.

  • Check that the domain is available for registration under 'Check Availability'.
  • Register it and wait a little for the confirmation mail.
  • Go to www.john-doe.co.za and click on Forward (you'll be asked to login)
  • Enter the address of John's facebook page (incl. http://) and click submit.

Forward domain

You're done. Of course you can forward your domain to any page you like, such as your blog or Twitter profile. In fact you can set up an unlimited number of forwarding rules . In the example above we forwarded www.john-doe.co.za to Facebook but in addition you can forward blog.john-doe.co.za to John's blog and twitter.john-doe.co.za to John's Twitter page. Simply go to blog.john-doe.co.za, twitter.john-doe.co.za or abc.john-doe.co.za and set a forwarding address. Easy.

Can I change a forwarding address?

Yes. If at some point you want to change it, point your browser at www.john-doe.co.za/microsite?forwarding=off to turn forwarding off that one time so that you can change the address.

What about email?

One of the nice things of having your own domain is that you can also have your own email address. In fact you can potentially have as many email addresses as you like, such as you@yourdomain.co.za, colleague@yourdomain.co.za, sister@... Check the HOWTO section of this site to learn how to use, for example, Google Apps (just like Gmail but more) with your domain for free.
